STRADLING, Sir Edward, 5th Baronet (1672?-1735) of St Donats, Co. Glamorgan. "Cardiff Boroughs 1698-1701, 1710-1722" Born ?1672, 2nd but 1st surviving son of Sir Edward Stradling, 4th Baronet, by Elizabeth, d. of Anthony Hungerford of Black Bourton, Oxon. Educated at Ch.Ch., Oxon 18.7.1684 aged 12, m. 5.6.1694, Elizabeth, younger d. of Sir Edward Mansel, 4th Bt.; MP of Margam, Glamorgan. 2 sons; suc. father 5.9.1685; Sheriff of Glamorgan 1709-1710.
Stradling owed his Cardiff seat as much to his own influence in Glamorgan, where his rent roll was said to be £50001 as to the support of his brother-in-law, Thomas Mansel a former MP for the boroughs and the county. Described in 1715 as a Tory who might often vote with the Whigs, he voted with the opposition in all recorded divisions. In 1721 his name was sent to the Pretender as a probable supporter in the event of a rising2. He retired from Parliament in favour of his son, Edward in 1722 and died 5.4.1735.
