- · 1611 - John Stradling of St Donats, Glamorgan, Knt.
s & h of Francis Stradling of St Georges, near Bristol
(d.1589), by Mary, d.of Bartholomew MITCHELL, was b.
1563; matric at Oxon, Brasenose 18.7.1580; BA (Mag Hall)
7.2.1583/4; Sheriff of Glamorgan 1607-8 and 1617 and
1620; knighted 15.5.1608 (as of "Salop") at Whitehall;
suc. to the castle and estates of St Donats aforsaid on
the death, o.p., 15.5.1609 of his second cousin, Sir
Edmund Stradling1 shortly after which he was created Bt.
as above at the instsution of that order 22.5.1611; was
MP for St Germans 1624/5; for Old Sarum 1625 and for
Glamorgan 1625/6. He was also an author of some note as
an Historian and Poet. He m. in or before 1600,
Elizabeth, d. and h. of Ed. Gage (5th son of Sir Ed. Gage
of Firle, Sussex), by Margaret, d. of John SHELLEY of
Mitchelgrove, Co. Sussex. He d. 9.9.1637 and was b.
11.9.1637 at St Donats aged 73. Funeral cert. in the
College of Arms. Will pr. 1637.

16.6.1615; suc. to Bt. 9.9.1637; MP for Glamorgan April-
May 1640; was concerned in several business undertakings;
was Col of a regiment of foot on behalf of the King at
Edgehill in 10/1642 where he was taken prisoner but was
soon released. He m. about 1620, Mary, d. of Sir Thomas
Mansel, 1st Bt. of Margam by his second wife, Jane, d. of
Thomas POLE. He died while attending the King at Oxon
and was b. 21.6.1644 in the chapel of Jesus College, in
the parish of St Michaels. His widow gave protection to
Bishop Ussher at St Donats in 7/1645.

s.& h., b. c.1624, knighted at Oxford 13.6.1643; suc. to
Bt. in 6.1944; fought for the Royal Cause3 at the battle
of Newbury, 10/1644. He m. about 1642, Catherine d. of
Hugh Perry, Alderman and Sheriff of London 1632-33. He
d. (it is said of 'consumption') before 1661. His widow
m. Bussy Mansel of Britton Ferry, co. Glamorgan.

s.& h., b. about 1643, suc. to Bt. before 1661; matric at
Oxon (Jesus Coll) 26.10.1660 and cr. MA 12.9.1661 being
then a Bt. He m. 20.11.1667 at St Giles in the Fields
(Lic. Vic. Gen., he aged 24, she aged 18 with consent of
Mother) Elizabeth, d. of Anthony Hungerford of Farley
Castle, co. Somerset. He d. 5.9.1685.

s. & h., b. 1672; matric at Oxon (Ch.Ch.) 18.7.1684 aged
12; suc. to Bt. 5.9.1685. MP for cardiff in 5
Parliaments 1698-1701 & 1710-1722; Sheriff of Glamorgan
1709-1710. He m. Elizabeth, sister of Thomas, 1st Baron
Mansel of Margam, d. of Sir Ed. Mansel, 3rd Bt., by
Martha, d. of Ed. CARNE. He d. 8.4.1735. Will pr.
1735.

2nd but inly surv. s. & h., b. 24.7.1710; suc. to Bt.
5.4.1735. He died unm. at Montpellier in the South of
France 27.9.1738, aged 374 when the Baronetcy became
extinct5. Will dated 4.4.1735, pr. 15.12.1738.
Notes:
1. This Edward Stradling, who died at the age of about
80 was s. & h. of Sir Thomas Stradling (d.1571, aged 73),
s.& h. of Sir Edward Stradling (d. 8.5.1535), s.& h. of
Sir Thomas Stradling (d.1480, aged 24) which Thomas was
father of Henry Stradling; father of Francis Stradling
and Grandfather of Legatee. He was an author,
antiquary and a great genealogist.
2. He was one of six brothers, all of whom were
distinguished loyalists viz:-

- · Thomas, a Lieut.Col. under him
- · John, Capt in the expedition to Rhee
- · Sir Henry, Capt. of a man-o'-war, and one of the two
naval officers whom the parliament could not bring over
- · Francis, a Capt. in Ireland who died before the
rebellion
- · George, who as a fellow of All Souls College, Oxon,
served in the army during the civil war and who
afterwards was Dean of Chichester (1672-88)
3. His brothers John and Thomas were on the same side
and were implicated in the Glamorgan rising 1647-8.
John died a prisoner in 1648.
