Extracts from
Calendar of Fine Rolls
“The Fine Rolls are in the main, though sometimes
indirectly, concerned with the passage of money to the
king. They record the deaths of tenants in capite,
when death duties in the form of fees paid for ‘relief’
became due, and they note the appointment of many
officials, such as sheriffs, constables of castles, and
guardians of estates, many of whom gave money for their
privileges, besides the sums exacted for breaches of the
law and for various forms of licence. The origin of the
term is interesting, for just as at the close of a legal
process today it is usual for money to pass, so at the
time when the defendant “finem fecit cum Rege” finished
his dipute, he usually appeased the King’s wrath by a
monetary payment, to which therefore the term Finis
became permenantly attached. The Fine Rolls are
particularly valuable as showing what offices men held,
in what fashion they ended their real or fictitious
disputes with the King, and when they themselves
finished.”
